I’ve learned that you don’t necessarily need to have an advanced degree, speak five languages and have lived in ten countries to develop cultural intelligence. By preparing in advance rather than just “parashooting in” with uninformed assumptions and a stale business plan, I have found greater success. Each of these tools provides a different perspective, so I use them together to inform me about the nuances of each place I visit so that I can adapt my approach to the local culture. Used in combination, tools like these can provide a comprehensive toolkit for enhancing cultural intelligence and developing cultural capital. Users can select the countries they are working with and review a cultural mapping based on eight dimensions: communication, feedback, thinking, leadership, decision-making, trust, disagreement and time perception. The model categorizes cultures into groups based on characteristics such as behavior, communication and time management: multi-active cultures, which are people-oriented and expressive, such as those found in Latin America, Italy and Spain linear-active cultures, which are task-oriented and highly organized, like those in Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States and reactive cultures, which are introverted and emphasize respect, such as those in Vietnam, China and Japan.įinally, Erin Meyer’s Culture Mapping tool is a useful resource for analyzing cultural differences. I’ve found the Lewis Model, proposed by Richard Lewis in his book “When Cultures Collide,” provides another insightful view of cultures. For instance, the United States ranks 26 out of 100 on the long-term orientation dimension, while Japan ranks 88, indicating that a Japanese company may have a 100-year perspective on business issues while an American company may have a more short-term approach. It evaluates six cultural dimensions-power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation and indulgence-and compares them between and among cultures. The Hofstede Insights Culture Compass is a valuable tool for understanding the impact of one’s cultural value preferences and potential pitfalls when working with individuals from different countries. Three resources I’ve found especially helpful are the Hofstede Insights Culture Compass, the Lewis Model and the Meyer Culture Map. There are plenty of resources available to help employees and companies improve their CQ. CQ improves one’s personal qualities and abilities to observe behavior, understand nuances, build trust and adapt to a specific cultural context. It also encompasses intangible elements such as attitudes, values, beliefs and social organization.ĭeveloping cultural intelligence is crucial to increasing the chances of success in a foreign market.
